Prisoners provided poor quality food, deprived of basic needs in Indian jails, NHRC confirmed

New Delhi, July 26, 2022 (PPI-OT):India that has been long blamed for providing poor quality food to prisoners and depriving them of other basic facilities in jails, now the allegations have been confirmed none other than its own National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The NHRC while taking cognizance of media reports that prisoners are served poor quality food in jails all across India, particularly in Bihar state issued notice to the jail authorities to submit reports in this regard within a stipulated time period.

The NHRC in a notice to Director General of Prisons, Bihar, summoned a report on the above matter within six weeks. Besides the quality of food, the report should also include the status of other basic facilities for the prisoners in, said the commission.
