Reducing importance of Urdu language in IIOJK regrettable

Srinagar, September 12, 2020 (PPI-OT): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Employees Joint Consultative Committee (EJCC) has said that the Indian government’s move to make other languages along with Urdu the official languages in the territory is tantamount to reduce the importance of Urdu.

The Hindu extremist Indian government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), headed by Narendra Modi, has approved the status of Hindi, Dogri, Kashmiri and English as official languages in Kashmir to reduce the status and importance of Urdu.

The JKCC Chairman, Ejaz Ahmad Khan, in a statement issued in Srinagar said, although all languages are important, however, Urdu has a special status in this regard as it is widely spoken language after English.

He said Urdu is the language of communication in the entire region and is a symbol of unity and solidarity among the people. He said although English is the dominant language in government and non-government offices or institutions, however, Urdu is used in courts, finance department, police and other departments.

Ejaz Ahmad Khan said, limiting the importance and usefulness of Urdu language is nothing less than a tragedy. He added that Urdu had been the official language of Kashmir for a long time so it as intolerable to undermine its importance.
