Release of Hurriyat leaders, activists demanded

Islamabad, April 19, 2020 (PPI-OT): Senior Vice Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir National Front (JKNF), Altaf Hussain Wani has urged the release of all illegally detained Hurriyat leaders and activist lodged in different prisons of India and occupied Kashmir.

Altaf Hussain Wani in a statement issued in Islamabad said that the Indian government’s deliberate act of keeping Kashmiri political prisoners in highly congested prisons is not only immoral and illegal but also a serious violation of the basic human rights.

He said, “At a time when prison decongestion measures are adopted and appreciated worldwide to prevent outbreak of corona pandemic the government of India has brazenly refused to heed the world human rights organizations’ calls for the release of Kashmiri prisoners.”

The illegally detained Hurriyat leaders and activists, he said, have been lodged in far-flung and highly congested prisons in India. “Even the family members of the detainees are not in a position to visit them in jails because of the persisting lockdown”, Wani said, adding that at this very crucial time the Indian government should learn a lesson from other world countries who have released prisoners in view of the COVID-19 pandemic on humanitarian grounds.

Altaf Wani said that occupation forces had crossed all limits of cruelty in occupied Kashmir. He added that situation in the region had worsened so much that Kashmiris could not even mourn the deaths of their beloved ones. “The right to mourn too has been snatched away from Kashmiris”, he deplored.

He urged the world human rights bodies to mount pressure on India to release Kashmir detainees languishing in different jails of India and the territory. Meanwhile, the JKNF spokesman in a statement paid tributes to S Hameed who was martyred by Indian forces in mid 90s.
