Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab said today that road repair and construction work is being commenced after the end of the current spell of rains.

He mentioned that it is not unusual for roads to suffer damage due to rainwater, and the Engineering Department has been instructed to start repair work immediately. The KMC parks should see the initiation of modern projects to provide citizens with enhanced facilities and recreational opportunities.

He expressed these views while addressing officials from these departments at the KMC head office. Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi, Director General of the Engineering Department Azhar Ali Shah, Director General Parks Junaid Ullah Khan, Financial Advisor Nayab Saeed, Chief Engineers of all districts, and other relevant officials were also present.

Wahab reviewed the progress of both departments and directed that all development projects be completed by December 31. He stressed that the pace of work on incomplete projects under the Annual Development Program should be accelerated and completed within the stipulated time. The mayor instructed the Director General of Parks to allocate space in parks for urban forestry to facilitate large-scale tree plantation, emphasizing that increasing tree cover is crucial for Karachi’s climate future. Trees play a vital role in maintaining a moderate climate.

Mayor Karachi further stated that achieving the set goals requires hard work and dedication, and citizens expect the municipal institutions to play their part in making Karachi better. He noted that 106 roads under KMC are currently clear, and traffic is flowing smoothly through all underpasses. KMC, Water Corporation, and other municipal institutions have worked tirelessly to drain rainwater, and the results this year are better than in previous years.

He pointed out that internal roads and streets in various areas are the responsibility of the respective towns, and they are also responsible for water drainage. He urged all town chairmen to expedite the drainage of water from internal roads and streets and clear areas where rainwater is still present.

Meanwhile, Wahab visited various areas of the city and thoroughly reviewed the situation that emerged after the rains. He mentioned that all storm water drains are clean, and there are no obstacles to water drainage.

The mayor directed that pothole on roads caused by accumulated rainwater be filled immediately, and in the first phase, roads should be made motorable. He emphasized that maintaining Karachi’s infrastructure is our vision, and all possible steps will be taken to achieve this. He added that they will not complain about a lack of authority and funds but will instead show results through our work.

He also mentioned that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also visited various areas and drains in Karachi the previous day and reviewed the situation firsthand, adding that, unnecessary criticism will not stop us from working, nor will it dampen our spirits. Mayor Karachi urged all officers and staff to work day and night to improve the roads and provide immediate relief to citizens. The mayor reviewed the roads under KMC’s management and issued on-the-spot instructions.
