Sehrai remembers Shopian tragedy victims Aasiya, Nilofar

Srinagar, May 28, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir Chairman, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai while remembering the rape-and-murder victims, Aasiya and Nilofar on their 10th martyrdom anniversary said that they lost their chastity and life only because they belonged to an oppressed territory.

Sehrai in a statement issued in Srinagar, today, termed, the 30th may 2009 Shopian incident as a great tragedy. He said the incident is not a case of isolation; it is a leaf out of the history of gravest human rights abuses and absolute impunity. He paid his highest homage to the two sisters.

Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai said, “We are morally and religiously bound to raise our deepest concern about these heart-wrenching issues. We as a dignified nation who sacrificed everything can never afford to forget our daughters whose modesty has been snatched and bulldozed to silence and frighten us for raising over voice and demand for political birth right.”

He deplored that perpetrators of Shopian tragedy were still roaming scot free. “When it comes to Kashmir the word justice has been often mocked. It is even not justice to use this word in a virtual sense,” he said. He maintained that from the day one justice had been misused, interpolated and fabricated through the so-called Investigation, which had always been aimed at shielding the culprits rather than bringing them to book.

He said it is not only Asiya and Nilofar but there are hundreds of other women who underwent the same sort of oppression like the victims of Kunan-Poshpora and half widows, who have lost their sons through enforced disappearances.
