Senate Committee Ramps Up Efforts Against Drug Menace in Schools

In a decisive move, the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights, led by acting Chairman Senator Irfan-ul-Haque Siddiqui, addressed the escalating threats to child rights in educational institutions.

The meeting, held at the Parliament Lodges, spotlighted the pressing issue of narcotics use within schools in the Islamabad Capital Territory.

Senator Siddiqui expressed grave concerns over the drug problem, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention. He raised questions about the effectiveness of current awareness programs and advocated for a comprehensive overhaul of school curricula to include drug awareness education. He remarked, ‘No curriculum can succeed without capable teachers,’ pointing to deficiencies in teacher training which require urgent attention.

The Committee proposed the formation of a dedicated unit under the Ministry of Interior to tackle these issues within the ICT. This unit will comprise representatives from multiple sectors, including education, law enforcement, and human rights, to ensure coordinated efforts. The initiative aims to develop standard operating procedures for schools and establish a reporting mechanism to monitor drug-related activities.

Senator Siddiqui highlighted the importance of creating a pilot model in Islamabad to serve as a benchmark for other regions, stressing that a structured approach is essential for long-term success.

The Committee set a three-month deadline for the establishment of this unit and the implementation of the proposed measures, with a progress report to be reviewed subsequently. The resolve to secure a safe educational environment for all children was unanimously agreed upon by the Committee members and officials present.
