The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) District Office Ghotki today launched an environmental monitoring of two sugar mills operating in Ghotki district to evaluate their adherence to environmental regulations. The initiative is being carried out under the directives of SEPA Director General Naeem Ahmed Mughal.
Sindh EPA District Office Ghotki Assistant Director Asadullah Tunio led the inspection team, which was assisted by a SEPA-certified third-party environmental laboratory. The team visited JK 2 Sugar Mills in Ubauro and SGM Sugar Mills in Khanpur Mahar to assess ambient air quality, noise levels, boiler emissions, and effluent treatment plants (ETP).
Effluent water samples were collected for analysis to determine compliance with Sindh Environmental Quality Standards and the Sindh Environmental Protection Act 2014.
During the inspection, the monitoring team observed that the effluent treatment plants were operational, and proper measures had been taken at the ash dumping site, including earth filling to prevent environmental dispersion. Flow meters and pH meters were found installed at the ETP sites for regulatory compliance.
Mr Tunio informed the media that SEPA’s Regional Office Sukkur is actively overseeing environmental protection measures. He emphasized that regular monitoring of industries was ongoing across the region. Under SEPA’s directives, all sugar mills have installed effluent treatment plants and implemented controls for emissions, ash disposal, and sludge management.
