Shutdown against killings, HR abuses by Indian troops

Srinagar, January 13, 2018 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed, today, to protest against the surge in killings and other human rights violations by Indian troops in the territory. Call for the shutdown was given by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik. All shops, business establishments, private offices and fuel stations remained closed while traffic was off the road.

The puppet authorities imposed restrictions in Srinagar to prevent people from holding anti-India demonstrations. Indian police arrested Muhammad Yasin Malik after raiding his residence in Maisuma area of Srinagar, today, and shifted him to Kothi Bagh police station.

The occupation authorities had placed the Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Dukhtaran-e-Millat Chairperson, Aasiya Andrabi, under house arrest, last evening, while the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani, remains under continued house arrest for the past over eight years. The police had already arrested Hurriyat leaders including Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Bilal Siddiqi and Umar Aadil Dar. The detentions were aimed at stopping the leaders from leading the demonstrations. The occupation authorities also suspended train services in the Kashmir Valley.

The APHC Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani, in a statement issued in Srinagar expressed serious concern over the deteriorating health condition of illegally detained Kashmiris lodged in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail. He said that the Kashmiri prisoners including Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Dr Ghulam Muhammad Butt, Peer Saifullah, Ayaz Muhammad Akbar, Merajuddin Kalwal, Shahid-ul-Islam, Farooq Ahmed Dar, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Kamran Yousuf, Shahid Yousuf and Zahoor Ahmed Watali were being subjected to ill-treatment in the jail.

On the other hand, the puppet Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, in a written reply to the so-called Kashmir Assembly admitted that 9,042 people were injured in the actions of Indian troops and police personnel against protesters during 8th July 2016 to 27th February 2017. The mass uprising triggered by the extrajudicial killing of popular youth leader, Burhan Muzaffar Wani, on 8th July 2016, was at its peak during this period. Mehbooba Mufti also said that at least 726 persons were detained under draconian law, Public Safety Act, in the past two years. Indian troops conducted cordon and search operations in Srinagar and Ganderbal areas, today, causing huge inconvenience to the local people.
