Srinagar, July 23, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed in Kulgam district, today, against the killing of three youth by Indian troops during a cordon and search operation in Khudwani, yesterday. All shops and other business establishments were closed while traffic was off the road. The troops had killed three youth including Suhail Ahmad Dar and Mudassir Ahmad at Wani Mohalla in Khudwani area of the district.
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference in a statement issued in Srinagar criticized the imposition of ban by the Indian government on the entry of foreign journalists to Jammu and Kashmir. The APHC said that the decision was meant to conceal India’s brutalities in the occupied territory.
Prisoners in Central Jail, Srinagar, have gone on an indefinite hunger strike to protest against the undue shifting of detainees to jails in Jammu, poor food quality, denial of medical facilities and delay in trials. Family members of the prisoners told media in Srinagar that the prison conditions had significantly worsened since the imposition of Governor’s Rule in the territory.
The authorities arrested a student and a laborer in Bandipora, today. The detainees identified as Umar Farooq Kanjwal and Deen Muhammad Malik were shifted to Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu after being slapped with draconian Public Safety Act.
Indian police beat up a photojournalist while he was carrying out his professional duty in Srinagar, today. Farooq Shah, who is associated with Srinagar-based English daily, Rising Kashmir, was injured when police subjected him to torture during coverage of a protest demonstration at Barzullah in Srinagar.
A news gathering agency staged a protest at Lal Chowk in Srinagar against the registration of a case by the Indian authorities against the agency over publication of a letter by Kashmiri PhD scholar, Abdul Mannan Wani. The letter had justified Kashmiri people’s resistance against the Indian occupation. The participants carried banners and placards reading slogans against restrictions on freedom of press.
