Shutdown in Sopore against killing of Hurriyat activist

Srinagar, September 14, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown is being observed in Sopore and Zainageer areas of Baramulla district, today, to protest against the killing of Hurriyat activist, Hakeem-ur-Rehman Sultani, and youth by Indian troops. Call for the shutdown has been given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.

All shops, business establishments and petrol pumps are closed in Sopore and Zaingeer areas while transport is off the road. The occupation authorities yesterday ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Sopore sub-division today. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference activist, Hakeem-ur-Rehman Sultani, was shot dead by Indian troops in disguise last week. The troops also killed eight youth during violent cordon and search operations in Sopore, Kupwara and Riasi areas during the past two days. Meanwhile, people took to the streets Arampora area of Sopore.

Amid a complete shutdown in Sopore and Zaingeer areas of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday clashes erupted between protesting youth and government forces, sources said. Witnesses said that youth assembled at Arampora area of Sopore and shouting anti-India and pro-freedom slogans, they pelted stones on government forces already deployed in the area.

They said that forces responded with tear gas shells triggering clashes. Local sources said that youth identified as Zahoor Ahmad of Sopore sustained injuries during clashes and has been shifted to Sopore hospital.
