Sindh government has constituted a committee to assess and compensate the heavy financial losses suffered by transporters during recent violent incidents, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced following a high-level meeting with transport stakeholders on Saturday.

The decision, aimed at addressing grievances of the transport sector, was taken during a meeting held at the Karachi Commissioner’s office, where Memon chaired discussions with senior officials including Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Asif Haider Shah, Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, and Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Memon stated that the committee will submit its recommendations within ten days. He emphasised that the provincial government is committed to resolving transporters’ issues, noting that ‘transport is a vital sector and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure its stability.’

Referring to the recent unrest, Memon condemned the arson attacks on vehicles and the loss of lives, calling it a ‘grave criminal act.’ He disclosed that four drivers were killed during the violence, describing each death as a tragedy affecting entire families.

‘This is terrorism,’ Memon asserted, adding that the government will lodge cases under anti-terrorism laws against those responsible. He confirmed that authorities are identifying culprits using CCTV footage and vowed that legal action will be pursued rigorously.

Rejecting any justification for the destruction, Memon stated, ‘Setting vehicles on fire is not a solution to any problem. It is a crime.’ He warned that no one will be allowed to block roads or engage in lawlessness, and declared that those harming public property and safety are not well-wishers of the country but enemies of peace.

The committee’s formation marks a significant step in the provincial government’s efforts to restore trust among transporters and prevent future disruptions. Authorities expect the recommendations to guide future policy on compensations and security protocols for public and private transport operations across Karachi.
