KARACHI: Sindh government has sent a letter to Indus River System Authority (IRSA) and expressed its grave concerns over an acute shortage of water in the province and demanded to release extra water to Sindh province so that shortages could be balanced during kharif season before 10th of June, 2022.

The officers of Sindh Irrigation Department have written a letter to IRSA authorities on the directives of Sindh Minister Irrigation Jam Khan Shoro in protest of severe water shortage in Sindh province and non-implementation of 1991 water apportionment accord.

In this regard, Shoro said that Sindh province was facing severe water crisis due to unjust distribution of water shares by IRSA. He added that IRSA authorities were not distributing water among the provinces on the basis of equality during the shortages of water as per water accord of 1991.

He said that his department had written a letter to IRSA protesting over the severe shortage of water and injustice with the Sindh province. He informed that as per recent IRSA figures, Punjab province faced 34% shortage and Sindh province was given 42% water shortage during the month of April, 2022.

He added that at present, Sindh was facing 47% water shortage and Punjab 31% while IRSA authorities had increased water shortage in Sindh province during the month of May which was the shear violation of water agreement 1991.
