On the occasion of the International Day Against Hate Speech, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, emphasized the need to combat hate speech to promote global harmony in her message. She condemned the destructive forces of hatred, prejudice, and intolerance, and described how these issues negatively impact society, including division and violence.
Sharif highlighted the severe effects of hate speech, calling it an attack on an individual’s self-esteem and the collective conscience of humanity. She particularly pointed out Islamophobia as a grave example, targeting Muslim communities, their places of worship, and homes, which poses a threat to international peace.
In her address, the Chief Minister called for global accountability for the misuse of freedom of expression to spread hatred. She stressed that true freedom of expression should not be guided by hostility but should be directed with respect and understanding.
Sharif committed to leading initiatives to promote values of love, tolerance, and mutual respect in Punjab. She also promised to implement measures to curb the growth of hateful ideologies and confirmed her dedication to maintaining social harmony and peace at both local and global levels.
