Thar Express also runs in loss, passengers demand more facilities

February 16, 2012

Karachi: Thar Express – the only train from Sindh which travels to India– remains the victim of neglect of PR authorities since its inauguration while many passengers complain that the facilities in the train were below par, needing improvement on urgent basis.

On the other hand, the complicated visa issue also causes relatively low traffic of passengers on this route as many vacant seats can be found. The trains consists nine bogies including eight economy class and one sleeper cars.

Sources told PPI that despite availability of seats, only 200 to 300 people travel through the train which is causing financial loss to the railway department.

They said that the visa problem remains the major hindrance in the success of the train, adding that the provided facilities were also not up to the mark which is also a discouraging factor for the passengers.

The train departs from Karachi at 11:55pm for Bhagat Ki Kothi in India where it is scheduled to reach at 8am. Six kilometers apart, Munabao and Khokhrapar are the two last railway stations of the India-Pakistan border. Bhagat ki Kothi is only five KM from Jodhpur Railway Station.

Chairman Railway Workers’ Union Manzoor Ahmed Razi said that the passengers should be given first priority while their genuine complaints must be addressed. He said the condition of some of the trains was pathetic which needed improve while PR should take initiative to improve it service standard which would encourage the passengers to utilize trains as choicest travelling mean.

He said that the higher PR authorities were busy privatizing the trains which would prove unsuccessful with passage of time, adding instead that they should spend their energies and resources in improving the condition of the department.
