Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab today voiced strong concerns regarding the protracted delay in completing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects and the persistent problems stemming from past infrastructure repair and expansion errors.
He called upon the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) to establish a definitive timeline for project completion and guarantee the prompt restoration of all infrastructure harmed during construction.
In a declaration released today, the Mayor stressed that due to the carelessness and inadequate administration of other organizations, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) continues to shoulder the burden of public disapproval and hardship. Citing past instances at Nagan Chowrangi and KDA Chowrangi, he noted that faulty blueprints and a lack of collaboration resulted in extended disruptions for the populace.
‘Even now, residents are facing difficulties due to the continuing disturbances at University Road stemming from the Red Line endeavor. The accountability rests with PIDCL, which disassembled vital infrastructure without guaranteeing its restoration. Thoroughfares, walkways, and other essential amenities must be returned to their original state to provide respite to the citizens of Karachi,’ stated Mayor Wahab.
He also underscored that despite a No Objection Certificate (NOC) being granted for the undertaking in 2017, it remains unfinished, raising doubts about the effectiveness and capability of the implementing bodies. ‘At the current rate of progress, there is a legitimate worry that these ventures might not be finalized even by 2035. This is intolerable for a metropolis like Karachi, where millions rely on operational infrastructure,’ he appended.
Mayor Wahab firmly advocated for the inclusion of local officials in all stages of construction and expansion to ensure openness, efficacy, and enduring advancement. ‘Without the participation of local governance, schemes risk replicating previous errors, leading to the decay of infrastructure and further public distress,’ he commented.
The Mayor reiterated KMC’s dedication to protecting the interests of Karachi’s inhabitants and ensuring that no developmental scheme compromises the city’s infrastructure or public wellbeing.
