To highlight the serious issue of environmental degradation, the Department of Environment and Forestry organized a tree plantation ceremony and a public walk at the District Complex Okara. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Member of Provincial Assembly Chaudhry Ghulam Raza Rabeera and Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Usman Javed actively participated by planting trees on the lawn of the DC office.

To enhance the occasion further, an awareness walk was organized to emphasize the importance of environmental protection. Additional Deputy Commissioner Finance and Planning Chaudhry Abdul Jabbar Gujar, Assistant Commissioner Rab Nawaz, and Divisional Forest Officer Mushtaq Hussain Chughtai supported the cause along with civil society members and citizens.

Addressing the gathering, Chaudhry Ghulam Raza Rabeera highlighted the dangerous challenges of global warming, explaining that the deforestation rate in Pakistan is alarmingly high. He praised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s commitment to improving environmental health through decisive measures to combat air pollution. Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Usman Javed termed the campaign to plant trees worth 60 million rupees across the district as a significant step towards environmental improvement.

A major focus of this initiative was the harmful effects of plastic on air quality. Organizers emphasized the shift towards cloth bags instead of plastic and stressed the need for public education in schools and colleges regarding the reduction of plastic usage. At the end of the walk, the distribution of cloth bags by Chaudhry Ghulam Raza Rabeera and Ahmed Usman Javed symbolized a tangible step towards sustainable practices.

This active engagement on World Environment Day reflects Okara’s commitment to reversing environmental damage and promoting a greener future through collective efforts and education.
