United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Saturday welcomed the meeting of the foreign ministers of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia in Djibouti, praising it as another important step in the rapprochement among the countries in the Horn of Africa region.
The meeting, held on Thursday in Djibouti, resulted in the signing of a cooperation agreement between Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, in the attendance of the Djiboutian head of diplomacy.
In a statement attributable to his spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief stressed that “the agreement reached among the four ministers to work together to restore peace and stability in the region is a positive example for the Horn (of Africa) and beyond.”
“The Secretary-General reiterates the readiness of the United Nations to support countries in the Horn of Africa region in consolidating the recent remarkable gains,” the spokesman said.
As a result of Thursday’s meeting, Eritrea and Djibouti, which have been locked in a decade-long border dispute, agreed to normalize diplomatic relations.
