UNAIDS official leading delegation meets CM aide

KARACHI: Administrator Karachi, Sindh government’s Spokesman and CM Advisor on Law Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday said that the world’s fastest and most developed cities want to intensify efforts to prevent HIV program (AIDS) in the backward cities of the world.

He expressed these views while talking to a five-member delegation led by Ms. Yuki Takemoto, UNAIDS Country Director for Pakistan and Afghanistan. Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi, Senior Director Medical and Health Services Dr. Hameed Jamani and other officers were also present on the occasion.

The Administrator Karachi said that the city administration is ready to sign a memorandum of understanding to protect its citizens from HIV and to implement state-of-the-art AIDS prevention facilities as much as possible. He said that the program presented by the delegation will make the citizens realize that if they are suffering from a deadly disease like AIDS, they can take the fastest way to protect themselves from the disease under this program.

He said that the situation in Pakistan and especially in Karachi in this regard is worrisome and immediate provision of modern and effective treatment under HIV program (AIDS) is essential. The Administrator Karachi said that if there is a need for legislation through the government of Sindh, it will be done and if there is a need to amend any law, then the government of Sindh will be in the forefront.

Ms. Yuki Takemoto, UNAIDS Country Director for Pakistan and Afghanistan, said that the AIDS Prevention Program was launched in Paris in 2014 and now its scope has expanded to 350 cities of the world. She said that now through the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Karachi will become the city that is committed to eradicating AIDS.

She said that the main objective of this program is to adopt the modern method which is prevalent in the world at present. Ms. Yuki Takemoto said that the citizens of Pakistan and especially Karachi should be made aware to adopt the latest technology in the world to avoid this deadly disease.
