Lucknow, September 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):The government in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh started, today, the process of conducting a survey of the madrasas (Islamic education institutions). Muslim organizations and leaders have strongly opposed the UP government’s move. Bulandshahr Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Arvind Kumar Singh, said the survey of all unrecognised (private) madrasas is starting in Uttar Pradesh from today.
Acting upon a government order, the teams of officials for the madrasas survey have been constituted by District Magistrate (DM). “As per government orders, a survey of all unrecognized Madrasas is to be done. The DM has constituted teams of officials, Tehsil-wise. Survey work will start today on the basis of 12 points,” SDM Arvind Kumar Singh said.
Earlier, the UP government declared to conduct a survey of unrecognised madrasas with the claim to ascertain information on the number of students, teachers, curriculum and its affiliation with any non-governmental organisations. On the other hand, the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind termed the move a malicious attempt to disparage this education system, asserting to defend the Islamic seminaries at all costs.
More than 200 madrasa representatives, including those from prestigious seminaries like Darul Uloom at Deoband, Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow, Mazahir Uloom, Saharanpur, and others, attended a meeting recently held in New Delhi the theme of which was protect madrassas. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Member of Indian Parliament from Hyderabad, Asaduddin Owaisi, described the UP government’s move as harassment of Muslims.
He said the state government has no right to interfere in the functioning of these madrasas as they don’t receive any funds either from the state government or from the Indian central government. He maintained that under Article 30 of the Indian Constitution, Muslims have the right to set up and run educational institutions of their choice. Owaisi said even for madarsas recognized under Madarsa Board, the government has not paid salaries to teachers for the last two years.
