Water resources necessary for survival, agriculture and development: FM 

Islamabad, September 22, 2021 (PPI-OT):Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi says water is one of the limited resources necessary for survival, agriculture and development. In his remarks at the discussion titled “How changing water availability from ice and snow will impact our societies” on sidelines of 76th session of UNGA in New York, he said seventy percent of fresh water comes from glaciers and ice.

He said number of glaciers around the world has been declining since 1960. He said rapid decline in glaciers over the past ten years is unprecedented in the history of last two thousands year. The Foreign Minister said melting of glaciers has affected Pakistan’s agriculture, drinking water supply, hydroelectric power generation, and natural habitats and ecosystems. Shah Mahmood Qureshi called for use of modern technologies and innovations, especially digital technologies. He said this is essential for achieving the SDGs and environmental goals.
