WHO condemns Israeli killing of Palestinian health worker in West Bank

Jerusalem The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday strongly condemned the Israeli army killing of Sajed Mezher, a first responder working with the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) in the West Bank.

Mezher, an 18year old health worker, was shot in the abdomen early Wednesday while providing care to people injured during clashes in Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem. He was rushed to hospital, where was pronounced dead.

We are saddened by this tragic loss. Health workers provide critical care and save lives. Their protection must be ensured, said Head of the WHO Office for the West Bank and Gaza Dr Gerald Rockenschaub.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Sajed’s family and our colleagues at PMRS, he added.

The UN health agency reiterated that protection of health workers, patients and health facilities must be respected at all times.
