Workers’ welfare schemes stopped for last 2 years

Karachi, July 06, 2018 (PPI-OT): A 5-member delegation of labour leaders of Karachi Site area on Thursday called on to provincial caretaker minister for labour and human resources Simon John Daniel at his office and apprised him about the issues of labourers. Delegation comprised of Khawaja Mubasher Zubair chairman SITE labour forum, Irshad Bhutto joint secretary SITE labour forum, Muhammad Aslam Tanoli vice president national trade union, Israr Ahmed Kohinoor employees union and Gul Zameen Khan of SITE union.

Labour leaders apprised that welfare schemes which include death grants, marriage grants and scholarships for workers’ siblings had been stopped for last two years by the workers welfare board. They added that 70 percent flats at Maymar Labour colony had been allocated to workers; however, there is scarcity of civic facilities water, electricity and gas.

Labour leaders were of view that we are not demanding any funds from Sindh government adding that SESSI and workers welfare board Sindh were run on the funds contributed by workers. They demanded to appoint welfare mind-sets as heads of SESSI and workers welfare board Sindh who could facilitate workers instead of installing bureaucratic setups.

Caretaker minister for labour and human resources told them that he has directed labour department, SESSI and workers welfare board administrations to computerize all the record of registered workers and centralized data should be created for making access of workers to welfare measures trouble-free. He told them that he has also directed SESSI administration to stop local purchase of medicine so as to provide quality medicine to workers at SESSI healthcare facilities. “Though he came for shortest period, he is trying it’s hard to ensure some relief to workers”, Simon John Daniel assured labour leaders.
