World Cup 1992 triumph revived Pakistan cricket: Sarfraz Ahmed

KARACHI:Former Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, who led Pakistan to a memorable Champions Trophy triumph with a big win against India in the summit clash as icing on the cake, said World Cup 1992 title victory revived cricket in Pakistan.

He walked down the memory lane on the 29th anniversary of the historic victory. Pakistan won the World Cup after beating England by 22 runs in Australia on March 25, 1992.

“They were memorable moments for Pakistan,” said Ahmed. “I think it revived cricket in Pakistan and Pakistan dominated went on to dominate during the 1990s after the victory.”

He added that the mega event bring forth top-class players for Pakistan such as Inzamam-ul-Haq, Moin Khan and Mushtaq Ahmed.

Pakistan women cricket team player Nida Dar said that she now understands how big the victory was and how skipper Imran Khan led the team to the big triumph.

“I was only five when Pakistan won the title. But I remember how my family and cousins celebrated. Those were memorable moments. But now I understand how it was to win a title and how impressively Imran Khan led the side,” she said.

Pakistan head coach and former skipper Misbah-ul-Haq said that Imran Khan and Javed Miandad played a leading role and the youngsters also performed.

“It was a milestone for cricket fans of Pakistan,” Misbah said. “They were great and memorable moments for all fans and it also motivated me.”

All-rounder Mohammad Hafeez also said that the World Cup victory back then was the first step for him to take cricket seriously as a career as it motivated him after the whole country was so passionate about the victory including himself.

Former skipper Younis Khan said that he was glued to the television screen and watched the final match ball to ball for the first time in his life.

“We will always remember those memorable moments,” he said. “Players such as Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Ahmed and Moin Khan will always be remembered for their contribution.”
