Condolence message by Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations on the passing away of brave Kashmiri leader, Syed Ali Shah Gilani

Islamabad, September 02, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Pakistan Mission to the UN and I join the freedom loving people of Jammu and Kashmir and the Pakistani Nation in mourning the irreparable loss of the great Kashmiri leader, and epitome of Kashmir’s struggle for freedom and self-determination, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, message receive from New York today.

In this hour of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with Geelani Sahab’s family. We also convey deepest condolences to the All Parties Hurriyat Conference and the Kashmiri People. In Kashmir’s freedom struggle, Syed Ali Shah Geelani served as a beacon of strength and a symbol of resistance against India’s brutal oppression.

He fought incessantly for the right of self-determination of Kashmiris. His principled stance and the moral force that underpinned it remained decisive in resisting the illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir. Geelani Sahab was one of the strongest defenders of the existence and preservation of Pakistan and believed that Jammu and Kashmir was a part of Pakistan and, through resolute struggle for freedom, will ultimately join Pakistan.

Like Nelson Mandela, he was incarcerated but he remained steadfast and never succumbed. Even torture, inhuman and degrading treatment by Indian occupation forces could not dissuade him from his indomitable resolve to fight for freedom of Kashmiris. In recognition of Geelani sahab’s heroic leadership of the Kashmiri freedom struggle, and his love for Pakistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan has declared a Day of Mourning in Pakistan.

On this Day, the Pakistan’s flag will fly at half-mast to honour the passing of this great Kashmiri. I am confident that the people of Kashmir and Pakistan, inspired by the example of Syed Geelani sahab, will continue the struggle to secure self-determination and freedom for Jammu and Kashmir with renewed vigour and determination.

Iconic Syed Ali Gilani embraces martyrdom under detention in Srinagar

Srinagar, September 02, 2021 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the veteran Hurriyat leader and the icon of Kashmir Freedom Movement, Syed Ali Gilani, embraced martyrdom under detention in Srinagar on Wednesday night. He was 92.

Syed Ali Gilani was suffering from multiple ailments and continued to remain under house arrest for the last many years that took heavy toll on his health.

On the orders of the Indian government in 2015, the residence of Syed Ali Gilani was converted into a sub jail and the order was still in vogue. After converting Syed Ali Gilani’s residence and office at Hyderpora into a sub-jail, police also restricted the use of mobile and telephone services and barred the communication of the Hurriyat leaders and other office-bearers with the outer world.

The family sources of Syed Ali Gilani said that he developed serious complications on Wednesday afternoon and breathed his last in the night. “He had chest congestion and breathing problems. He passed away at 10:30 PM,” they said.

Syed Ali Gilani all along his life strived for the cause of freedom of Kashmir from Indian illegal occupation. He remained at the forefront of the Kashmiris’ struggle for right to self-determination. He remained associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir for most part of his life but later founded his own party by the name of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. He led the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) until late quitting the pro-freedom amalgam due to his worsening health condition.

Syed Ali Gilani was a staunch opponent of Indian illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir.

He remained passionate advocate of Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to Pakistan all along his life. The slogan ‘Hum Pakistani Hain, Pakistan Hamara Ha’ was coined by Syed Ali Gilani. President Dr Arif Alvi had last year conferred Nishan-i-Pakistan, the country’s highest civil award, on Syed Ali Gilani in recognition of his decades-old struggle for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
