Historic public gathering a referendum PTI govt: PPP leaders

LAHORE: Provincial Ministers Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Jam Ikramullah Dharejo, Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister Fayyaz Ali Butt and Special Assistants to CM Sindh Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar and Sadiq Ali Memon have congratulated PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PPP leadership, workers and peace and democracy loving people of Sindh at a successful and historic public gathering in Karachi.

They said in their statements on Monday that the historic public gathering in Karachi was a referendum against the poor policies of the PTI government, inflation, unemployment and poverty and now the days of the PTI government are numbered.

Chawla said in a statement that the people have become helpless at the hands of Imran Khan’s selected government and the prices of daily necessities are skyrocketing as life of a common man has become a torment. The successful power show of PPP in Karachi is a great political achievement of the Pakistan Peoples Party.

Dharejo said in a statement that the historic public gathering in Karachi proved that the people of Sindh are with PPP and they are for the betterment of the country and want Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to see the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Butt said that the historic public gathering in Karachi was a testament to the fact that the people were fed up with the policies of the PTI government and wanted real change. Only the Pakistan Peoples Party has the solution to the country’s problems.

Qamar said that the participation of millions of people in the Karachi public gathering has pronounced its verdict against the PTI government and Imran Khan should resign and should go home and hand over power to the real representatives of the people.

Memon, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh on Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Sindh, said that the conscious people of Sindh have proved by participating in the public gathering that Sindh is the stronghold of PPP and PPP will get majority in the next general elections and solve the problems of the poor people by establishing a real democratic government in the country.

US CG organizes a hackathon for female programmers

KARACHI: The US Consulate General, Karachi, in partnership with The Asia Foundation and the National Incubation Center, Karachi (NICK), hosted the second edition of Built by Her, a two-day virtual hackathon for female entrepreneurs and programmers from October 15 to October 17, 2021. The purpose of Built by Her 2021 was to identify innovative solutions to challenges relating to themes of women’s economic inclusion, accessibility to education, climate change and tourism. 866 people from 31 cities across Sindh and Balochistan participated in the event.

Mark Stroh, the United States Consul General in Karachi, Haris Qayyum Khan, Senior Advisor at The Asia Foundation, and Omar Abedin, Director at the National Incubation Center, Karachi, welcomed the participants at the program’s launch event and reiterated the importance of encouraging women to participate in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and the country’s ever-growing startup ecosystem to help unlock Pakistan’s economic potential.

As Consul General Stroh explained, “The United States is committed to empowering women, promoting gender equality, and supporting innovation through great initiatives like Built by Her. We have organized and supported programs this year like the Academy of Women Entrepreneurs, Qadam Barhao, and She Loves Tech. We know that programs like these develop skills and foster networks to enhance your economic opportunities.” NICK Director Omar Abedin expressed his delight at the launch of the hackathon: “The first iteration of Built by Her helped us grow the startup ecosystem by making it accessible to young innovative women from across Pakistan. This time around we are excited to see what Sindh and Balochistan bring to the table.”

The Built by Her hackathon program is just one of many programs the U.S. Consulate General, Karachi sponsors to foster sustainable and inclusive economic growth and to empower Pakistani women and girls.

Pakistan to showcase its projects at world’s biggest exhibition

SHC directs NEPRA to submit report on electrocution deaths

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday directed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to furnish a report about deaths from electrocution during rains in Karachi.

The court order came by a two-judge bench while hearing a petition filed by the Jamaat-e-Islami seeking action against K-Electric over poor maintenance of its installations which allegedly caused the fatalities during rains.

A counsel for the party said K-Electric being the metropolis’ sole power distributor was responsible for deaths. The court was told that the city’s sole power distributor was responsible for deaths. The deaths occurred due to electrocution during rains. In March, a session court had directed K-Electric to pay a Rs15 million penalty to the heirs of a 12-year-old boy who was killed by electric shock in 2013.

Reforms being brought in all Sindh jails: CS

KARACHI: An important meeting on prison reform was jointly chaired by Chief Secretary Sindh Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah and Federal Ombudsman Syed Tahir Shahbaz at the Sindh Secretariat on Monday. The meeting was attended by Federal Secretary Ombudsman Shoaib Siddiqui, Senior Advisor Anwar Haider, Law Secretary, IG Jail and other officials.

In the meeting, Chief Secretary Sindh said that reforms were being brought in all the jails of Sindh province. He further stated that the Department of Education, Health, Social Welfare, Stevta and Civil Society are working for the reforms.

“Oversight committees have also been formed under the prison reforms” he added. CS Sindh further stated that the Oversight committees include the judiciary, civil society, education and health experts and philanthropists. During the meeting, the officials of the Sindh Prison and Correction Service Department informed that a Prison Information Management System (PIMS) has been installed in the jails of the province which will be formally launched on November 2 this year.

On this, Chief Secretary Sindh said that the prison information management system would improve the monitoring and administrative matters of the jails. Giving information in the meeting, the IG prison said that vaccination of prisoners of the province has been started and new inmates are being tested and vaccinated for the corona virus. Informing the meeting, IG Jail said that more barracks are being set up in Thatta, Shaheed Benazirabad and Malir Jails and more new jails including in Karachi West for 800 inmates, 300 in Tharparkar, 200 in Qambar Shahdadkot and 300 in Kashmore at Kandhkot while Mirpur Khas District Prison had been upgraded to Central Jail.

Appreciating the prison reforms of the Sindh government, the Federal Ombudsman said that the Sindh government has done a great job in prison reforms. He also directed IG prison to ensure visits of Oversight committees and their reports may also be sent to the commission as these will be made part of the report that be presented in the Supreme Court. Later, Federal Ombudsman Syed Tahir Shahbaz and others also visited the office of Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace.

Nation celebrates Eid Milad-un-Nabi (SAWW) tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: Faithfuls, across the globe, will celebrate Eid Milad-un-Nabi Sallallaho Aliyhe Wassallam (SAWW) tomorrow (Tuesday) with religious and traditional zeal, renewing the pledge to disseminate teachings of Allah Almighty’s last Messenger.

The day will dawn with 31 and 21 gun-salute in the federal and provincial capitals respectively to pay homage to Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wa Sallam Khatam-un-Nabiyeen, Rahmat ul Lil Aalmeen. Special prayers will be offered in mosques for peace, progress and prosperity of the country, besides early liberation of Palestine and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the Ministry of Religious Affairs to celebrate Jashan-e-Eid Miladun Nabi Sallallaho Alyhe Wasallam across the country in an unprecedented manner. He has also directed the federal ministers and members of parliament to celebrate Eid Milad-un-Nabi in their constituencies with full zeal. All government and private buildings, including streets, markets and mosques have been decorated with colourful lights and buntings.

State-of-the-art PET CT scan made functional for cancer patients at Kiran Hospital

KARACHI: Director, Kiran Hospital Karachi, Dr Akhtar Ahmed has said that state-of-the-art PET CT scan has been made operational for cancer patients at the hospital and more modern diagnostic facilities for cancer will be provided in the future.

He expressed these views while talking to reporters at his office. He said that Kiran Hospital is one of the 18 centers of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in the country where cancer patients are being treated since 20 years. The center caters to cancer patients all over the Sindh province.

Ahmed revealed that breast cancer is common in women while mouth cancer is more prevalent in men. He said that 5500 different types of cancers are being registered in Kiran Hospital annually while daily OPD is around 700. All cancer patients are treated at Kiran Hospital Karachi while poor patients are given free chemotherapy in collaboration with Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal and other chairtable organizations.

Ahmed said that the number of cancer patients is increasing due to which the demand for qualified medical staff in the center is also increasing. He said that Kiran Hospital has been providing treatment facilities to cancer patients for 20 years with the help of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and modern machinery has also been brought to the hospital.
