Authorities in the capital have initiated a city-wide crackdown on unlicensed drivers today, following the conclusion of a highly successful month-long driving license registration initiative that saw a historic surge in applications, a police spokesperson announced.

The enforcement action began after the special registration drive, launched under directives from the Federal Interior Minister and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad, officially ended on October 7. The program was designed to encourage motorists to legitimize their driving status.

During the campaign, which ran from September 1 to October 7, a record 128,000 citizens completed the licensing process. This represents a staggering 540 percent increase in applications when compared to previous months, a clear indicator of the public’s significant engagement.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Captain (R) Hamza Humayun described the influx as the highest surge in license registrations over the past eight years. He expressed gratitude for the citizens’ overwhelming response and trust in the Islamabad Traffic Police, noting that every possible measure was taken to facilitate applicants.

To manage the high volume of residents seeking licenses, two major licensing centers and mobile facilitation vans were kept operational 24/7. This round-the-clock service ensured that all individuals had ample opportunity to complete their registration.

With the end of the grace period, CTO Hamza Humayun has issued a stern warning that strict measures will now be enforced against all motorists operating vehicles without a valid permit. “Enforcement will be carried out without discrimination to ensure compliance with traffic laws,” he stated, emphasizing the goal of promoting road safety.

He urged all citizens to carry their driving licenses while traveling. For those who have not yet obtained a permanent license, the CTO advised them to at least print and carry their learner’s permit to avoid penalties during the enforcement operations.
