A parliamentary committee has expressed profound distress over the substantial loss of life and property caused by recent nationwide floods, urging disaster management authorities to persist with rehabilitation efforts, even as it advanced crucial human rights legislation on Thursday.

Meeting at Parliament House, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights, chaired by Ms. Zahra Wadood Fatemi, MNA, unanimously sanctioned ‘The National Commission for Human Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2025.’ The government-sponsored measure was cleared without any modifications.

The panel also reviewed ‘The National Commission on the Rights of Child (Amendment) Bill, 2025,’ a private member’s bill introduced by Ms. Sehar Kamran, MNA. The committee recommended its passage after incorporating certain amendments proposed by its members.

Turning to humanitarian issues, the body voiced grave concern regarding the devastation wrought by the recent inundations. While the members commended the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for its prompt relief operations, they underscored the need for continued support for those affected.

The committee directed the NDMA to maintain its rehabilitation initiatives in partnership with provincial authorities until the complete recovery of impacted communities. Furthermore, the panel called on the Authority to enhance its coordination with provincial governments and both national and international non-governmental organizations to guarantee the effective distribution of aid to victims.

The session was attended by MNAs Mr. Danyal Chaudhary, Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, Ms. Asiya Naz Tanoli, Ms. Tamkeen Akhtar Niazi, Ms. Zeb Jaffar, Ms. Sehar Kamran, Ms. Sabheen Ghoury, Ms. Shahida Rehmani, Mr. Naveed Aamir, and Mr. Khawaja Izhar ul Hassan. Dr. Nelson Azeem participated remotely, alongside senior officials from the Ministries of Human Rights, Law and Justice, and the NDMA.
