Awareness session on controlling air pollution held in Mirpurkhas, kiln owners participate

An awareness and constructive session was held on Monday in Mirpurkhas by the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency to control air pollution.

Kiln operators and their representatives were briefed on the legal requirements, which included the need to convert traditional kilns to modern zigzag technology, obtain environmental approval, and adhere to Sindh’s environmental quality standards to prevent air pollution.

Addressing the participants, social leader Muhammad Bakhsh Kapri emphasized the serious environmental problems facing the region and the harmful health effects of smoke from kilns on the local population, especially women and children, and stressed the need for an effective solution.

In response, kiln owners expressed their financial difficulties, citing low brick prices locally and the heavy costs associated with the technological change. They said it was financially impossible for them to adopt the modern system individually.

The environmental agency recommended a collaborative approach, suggesting that operators install zigzag technology on a joint basis. Officials said this would not only reduce the financial burden but would also prove to be more profitable and environmentally friendly, effectively reducing air pollution.

SEPA officials clarified that while the meeting was intended to educate and guide operators towards legal compliance, they also issued a stern warning. In case of non-compliance with environmental laws, including the recently enforced regulations against substandard fuel, strict legal action will be taken in accordance with the Sindh Environmental Protection Act.
