Pakistan Accuses India of Illegally Suspending Key Water Treaty

Pakistan has accused India of an “illegal and unilateral act” by putting the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) into abeyance, urging for greater fidelity to international law and the core principles of the United Nations Charter.

The statement was made today by Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, during his address at the International Law Year in Review 2026 Conference held in the city-state.

The envoy drew attention to the need for the global community to uphold and apply international statutes more consistently, courageously, and faithfully.

During his speech, Ambassador Ahmad also advocated for restraint concerning the use of force and demanded a better and more complete implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
