NA-85 Winner Represents Minority, Securing Votes of Just 24% of Electorate

An analysis of the General Elections 2024 has revealed a significant representation gap in the NA-85 Sargodha-IV constituency, where the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) secured victory with the backing of less than a quarter of the total registered voters.

According to a report today, the winner garnered only 24 percent support from the 507,216 eligible electors, despite winning the seat.

The successful candidate obtained 121,015 votes, which constituted 44 percent of the 277,775 ballots cast on February 8, 2024. However, a clear majority of those who participated in the election-150,141 individuals or 54 percent-cast their votes for other contenders, indicating a lack of majority endorsement for the eventual victor.

According to the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) for the constituency, voter turnout was recorded at 55 percent. The runner-up candidate secured a substantial 40 percent share of the vote, while the third-placed contender received three percent. The remaining candidates in the race collectively accounted for 11 percent of the total ballots.

Furthermore, a total of 6,619 ballots, representing two percent of all votes cast, were declared invalid and therefore were not counted towards any candidate”s total.

This data is part of a broader constituency-wise analysis by the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN). The organisation highlights how Pakistan”s First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system can result in skewed representation, particularly in multi-candidate contests common in the country.

FAFEN”s report suggests that such outcomes, where a winner is elected without the support of a majority of participating voters, can raise questions about the legitimacy of the mandate. This dynamic may potentially contribute to political instability, as a large portion of the electorate can feel unrepresented in the assembly.
