Finance Minister pledges comprehensive tax reforms during high-stakes US Economic Summit in Washington

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, who has arrived in the United States for high-level economic talks, today reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing key structural reforms, including broadening the national tax base and enhancing tax administration.

Mr. Aurangzeb is in Washington DC to attend the World Bank Group-IMF Spring Meetings starting today.

He is scheduled to represent Pakistan at important events organised by the international financial institutions and will take part in a wide range of multilateral and bilateral engagements with global financial leaders, development partners, and prominent policymakers.

Speaking recently at a panel discussion at Harvard University in Boston, the minister identified rapid population growth and climate change as two of the nation”s most critical, long-term challenges.

He emphasised that sustained economic progress would not be possible without addressing the country”s population increase, while also highlighting Pakistan”s increasing vulnerability to severe climate-related shocks.

The minister also pointed to Pakistan”s expanding renewable energy capacity, noting that solar generation has reached approximately 8,000 megawatts, which he stated had helped cushion the national economy during recent external pressures.
