Four individuals were arrested in Thatta today, facing charges under the anti-terrorism act following a protest against a power breakdown that affected local routes.
The public demonstration took place late yesterday evening at the main roundabout of the city’s bypass, lasting approximately six hours and causing significant disruption to traffic. Residents were expressing dissatisfaction over unannounced power outages and the disconnection of domestic electricity supply lines.
Tension escalated near the Darghah Ibrahim Shah in the Islam Pur area when local residents confronted staff of the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), including an SDO, over a transformer shutdown. Protesters allegedly surrounded the officer’s vehicle during the altercation.
Subsequently, law enforcement authorities registered a case under the stringent anti-terrorism act. The charges include blocking roads, interfering with government duties, destruction of property, and spreading fear and panic among the public.
Individuals identified in the legal document include Shehroz Chang, Raja Chang, Murad Chang, and Abdul Kareem Memon, who were taken into custody during a police operation. Raids are ongoing across the city to locate other named suspects.
The arrests have reportedly fueled further unrest in the city, with local residents indicating an intention for more demonstrations in response to these developments.
