Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Minister of Information and Public Relations Shafiq Jan visited Central Jail Peshawar today to transform detention centers into reformative institutions. During his inspection, he emphasized the provincial government’s commitment to rehabilitation and skill development initiatives for prisoners.
Minister Jan was given a detailed briefing on various operational aspects of the jail. His visit included tours of the barracks, drug rehabilitation center, library, and jail industry, where he reviewed ongoing reform and technical training programs aimed at aiding prisoners’ social reintegration.
The visit also included a review of creative activities, IT and English language classes, and the patients’ ward. The minister paid special attention to the quality of food available to prisoners, medical treatment, and overall rehabilitation facilities.
Minister Jan highlighted that the provincial government aims to transform jails into centers of reform and rehabilitation rather than mere detention centers. He emphasized the priorities of equipping prisoners with education and skills, stating that these efforts are crucial in enabling former inmates to lead honorable lives post-release.
He further noted that the jail industry and technical training centers play a significant role in fostering self-reliance among prisoners. The minister assured that further reforms are underway to address the issues of prisoners and jail staff, with an emphasis on promptly resolving staff issues.
