Faryal Talpur, Central President of the Pakistan People’s Party Women’s Wing, declared July 5 as a significant and mournful day in Pakistan’s history. On this day in 1977, the democratic aspirations of millions were suppressed under an authoritarian regime, resulting in the unconstitutional dismissal of the country’s first elected government, led by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
According to a statement from the Media Cell Bilawal House, Talpur highlighted that the actions of July 5, 1977, represent a severe attack on the nation’s constitution, the sovereign will of its people, and the democratic institutions envisioned by Bhutto. She praised Bhutto as an enduring symbol of resistance, bravery, and dignity, noting that his legacy continues to guide Pakistan’s democratic progress.
Talpur also paid tribute to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who revived democratic principles during the era of dictatorship. She credited President Asif Ali Zardari with advancing the party’s democratic mission through the restoration of constitutional integrity, demonstrating that dialogue and democracy are essential for national stability and progress.
Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was commended for his advocacy for constitutional supremacy, democratic continuity, social justice, and federal harmony, aligning with the vision of his predecessors. Talpur emphasized that July 5 serves as a reminder that nations do not gain strength by undermining democratic rights, but such actions give rise to injustice and uncertainty.
She expressed her confidence that the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir will uphold democratic values in the upcoming elections and shape their future with the power of their vote. Talpur reiterated the Pakistan People’s Party’s unwavering commitment to supporting the right to self-determination of the people of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
This reflection on July 5 highlights the enduring impact of historical events on Pakistan’s political landscape and the ongoing struggle for democratic principles.
