Tariq Chandio, Chief Organizer of Pasban Democratic Party Karachi, said today that with the arrival of monsoon rains, the citizens of Karachi are once again in fear and panic, because the city’s dilapidated infrastructure, destroyed sewage system, and poor cleaning of storm drains make even light rain a torment for the citizens. As monsoon rains are overshadowing Karachi, concerns are rising over the city’s preparedness to handle even minor rainfall. This city, plagued by deteriorating infrastructure and dysfunctional drainage systems, struggles to cope with seasonal rains. Once again, the promises of the Pakistan Peoples Party are under scrutiny, as the city’s drainage issues expose the failures of the government’s efforts.
Residents of the city fear roads turning into rivers and underpasses transforming into pools. The current drainage lines, many of which are outdated and ineffective, exacerbate the situation, endangering citizens and disrupting daily activities. Vehicles become immobilized, businesses close their doors, and educational institutions suspend operations amid the chaos.
Karachi’s storm drains, blocked by encroachments and debris, fail in their purpose. Despite significant funds allocated for their maintenance, these drains fail, allowing water to enter residential areas. Tariq Chandio, Chief Organizer of Pasban Democratic Party in Karachi, emphasizes the importance of transparent and complete cleaning of these critical pathways before the rains begin. He also advocates for the activation of effective pumping stations to mitigate flooding in low-lying areas.
Chandio calls for the establishment of emergency response centers to provide immediate assistance during the rainy season. Additionally, he demands an independent audit of the financial resources spent on drainage and sewage systems over the years, to uncover the reasons for Karachi’s annual submersion.
The situation highlights the broader issue of government incompetence in managing Karachi’s infrastructure. The repeated monsoon crises in Karachi, the economic powerhouse of Pakistan, indicate the need for immediate and effective intervention to prevent further disaster.
