Basant should be banned nationwide: Pakistan Justice and Democratic Party

The Pakistan Justice and Democratic Party (PJDP) has demanded an immediate and permanent nationwide ban on the Basant festival, and condemned recent provincial legislation allowing its celebration as reckless disregard for human life.

In a statement issued today by the Information Secretary, the party insisted that the federal government should outlaw the festival and obligate provincial authorities to seek permission from the central government before passing any related laws. The PJDP also demanded the immediate repeal of any such existing legislation.

The party stressed that “the lives of the public should not be played with for the sake of the desires of a few elements” and citizens should be protected from the distress associated with the event.

Along with a complete ban on the celebration, the PJDP also advocated for the introduction of harsh penalties for the manufacturing and sale of Basant supplies. The party also suggested a public awareness campaign to discourage people from participating in the festival.

The statement specifically criticized legislation passed in Punjab, calling the move “reprehensible” and stating that no lessons were learned from past deaths caused by kite strings. According to the party, the festival was permitted “thoughtlessly.”

The PJDP concluded its statement by demanding a permanent ban on this “bloody festival” to ensure that no more lives are lost and to prevent further damages.
