Canal breach floods rice crops in Shikarpur district

A 40-foot breach in the RD 133 Choee Shaakh irrigation canal near the village of Maashi in Shikarpur district on Sunday has flooded hundreds of acres of standing rice crops, according to initial reports.

Local villagers, without assistance from the Irrigation Department or district authorities, were struggling to plug the breach on their own. They alleged that the failure of the Irrigation Department to maintain protective embankments led to the breach.

As of the time of reporting, no staff from the Irrigation Department arrived at the site.
