The Pakistan Medical Association has expressed concern over the neglect of the crucial sectors of health and education in the federal budget and has called for a significant increase in the budget for the fiscal year 2025-26. The PMA expressed deep disappointment over the inadequate health budget, stating that the current expenditure is far below the recommended 6% of GDP, which does not meet international and national standards.

The PMA has demanded a significant increase in investment to strengthen primary healthcare services, enhance accessibility and affordability for all citizens, and invest in preventive health measures. The association also strongly objected to the proposed cuts in the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) for the National Health Services Division, warning that such cuts could severely hinder the progress of health facilities and services.

Furthermore, the PMA emphasized the urgent need to address the severe shortage of healthcare staff. It called for concrete measures to increase the number of medical professionals, improve their training, and ensure equitable distribution, especially in rural areas.

Preventive healthcare became the focus of the PMA’s appeal, stressing the importance of public health initiatives to tackle existing diseases and reduce the burden on the healthcare system. Additionally, the association advocated for the effective utilization of health taxes, emphasizing transparency in the use of revenue generated for public health programs.

The PMA reiterated its longstanding recommendations for comprehensive reforms in the health sector, including strong policies against counterfeit medicines, ensuring the availability of essential medicines at fair prices, and improving drug policy.

Finally, the PMA urged the government to immediately increase the allocation of the health sector budget to at least 3% of GDP, thereby creating a resilient health system, improving access to quality medical care, expanding disease prevention measures, and investing in medical research and training. It also emphasized the need for equitable distribution of resources, transparency in fund utilization, and the development of sustainable strategies for the improvement of health and education across the country with stakeholder involvement.

The PMA expressed its readiness to collaborate with the government, emphasizing that adequate attention and resources for health and education are essential for building a healthier, more educated, and prosperous Pakistan.
