Sardar Masood Khan, a seasoned diplomat and former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, has issued a stern warning regarding the escalating tensions between the US and Iran, cautioning that this situation could potentially evolve into a broader conflict with devastating consequences.
In a statement today, Ambassador Masood Khan highlighted the immense pressure on diplomatic channels amid hard-line statements and military exercises. He emphasized the crucial role of mediators like Pakistan, Qatar, and Oman, who could help bring both nations back to meaningful dialogue before the situation becomes irreparable.
The diplomat expressed concern over the erosion of trust following recent military actions and sanctions, which have dimmed the initial hopes created by the memorandum of understanding aimed at de-escalation. He stressed that mediators face not only international tensions but also internal political dynamics in Tehran and Washington.
Ambassador Masood Khan expressed concern over reports mentioning potential strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, warning that this could have catastrophic consequences that might extend beyond regional boundaries and affect the global security architecture. He identified the Strait of Hormuz as a flashpoint, noting its critical role in maritime security and global energy supply.
The ambassador praised Pakistan’s diplomatic initiative, alongside Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other leaders actively engaging with regional and global partners to prevent a full-scale war. Despite challenges, he emphasized maintaining diplomatic engagement, stating that the consequences of a new conflict could extend beyond the Middle East, threatening global economic stability and inviting further international intervention.
He commended the Gulf countries’ efforts to develop alternative oil export routes, yet highlighted the irreplaceable strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz and prioritized diplomatic stability.
Finally, Ambassador Masood Khan appealed for maximum restraint and renewed commitment to diplomatic efforts, asserting that sustainable peace is essential to prevent the region from plunging into a dangerous and unpredictable conflict.
