The International Human Rights Movement has made an urgent appeal for a coordinated global intervention in Sudan’s Darfur region, citing credible evidence of widespread atrocities and war crimes, and has warned that it is showing all the warning signs of genocide.
In a statement on Sunday, the organization expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation following the capture of the North Darfur city of El Fasher by the Rapid Support Forces. Reports from the region indicate serious violations of international humanitarian law, including systematic attacks on civilians, mass killings, extrajudicial executions, and widespread sexual violence, which has plunged the area into further chaos.
The escalating violence has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis. According to reports, thousands of families displaced from El Fasher are living in extremely dire conditions around Tawila, where they face severe shortages of food, clean water, shelter, and medical facilities. The human rights organization is demanding the immediate establishment of safe and uninterrupted humanitarian access to deliver essential aid to the affected population.
The movement has welcomed the initiation of evidence collection by the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court regarding the alleged crimes. Stressing that a formal determination of genocide can only be made by an authorized legal body, the organization emphasized that “all the risk factors for genocide are clearly present”. It also stressed that ensuring accountability is imperative and called on all parties to cooperate fully with investigative bodies.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, Rana Basharat Ali Khan described the situation as a “failure of the global conscience.” He said, “We cannot be spectators at a time when ethnically motivated violence and massacres are increasing day by day. The world must now move beyond mere expressions of concern and exert political and diplomatic pressure to ensure an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and full cooperation with international judicial bodies.”
