Lahore:Newly elected Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz Sunday visited Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore and announced an increase in the salaries of the prison guards. CM Hamza inaugurated the Quran and Hadith Teaching Centre established in the Security Ward-II and announced 60 days of pardon for prisoners’ sentences. Hamza Shehbaz has spent 22 months in jail in this ward.
The CM announced to make the salaries of the prison guards equal to the Punjab police. During the visit, Hamza also distributed Eid gifts among the prisoners and planted a tree in the lawn of the jail.
A Guard of Honor was presented to Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz when he reached the jail. Members of Punjab Assembly Abdul Aleem Khan, Khawaja Salman Rafique, Khawaja Imran Nazir, Hafiz Muhammad Noman, Additional Chief Secretary Home, Inspector General of Prisons, Commissioner Lahore, Deputy Commissioner Lahore and other officials were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the media after the committee meeting Maulana Syed Abdul Khabir Azad said they have not received any witness of moon sighting from any part of the country so the Eid will be observed on May 03.
The Meteorological Department had already predicted that the Eidul Fitr is likely to fall on May 3 (Tuesday) as the Shawwal moon is expected to be sighted on May 2 (Monday). The department said the birth of the Shawwal moon is expected at 1:28 am on the night between April 30 and May 1 and it would not be possible to see it with the naked eye on Sunday evening.
