Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Amjad Hussain Advocate took oath as the fifth chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday after being elected unopposed following the party’s victory in the 2026 regional elections.
Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah administered the oath during a ceremony in Gilgit attended by senior PPP leaders, lawmakers and other dignitaries.
Hussain, who was elected from the GBA-1 constituency and serves as president of the PPP’s Gilgit-Baltistan chapter, secured the office after no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the chief minister’s post.
Speaking after taking the oath, the newly sworn-in chief minister said the PPP had emerged as the largest political party in the June 7 elections, attributing the party’s success to the confidence reposed in it by the people across Gilgit-Baltistan.
He expressed gratitude to voters for granting the PPP a decisive mandate and particularly thanked young people and women for their active participation in the electoral process. He said the party’s candidates had earned the trust of constituents across their respective constituencies.
Hussain said the people had once again demonstrated their confidence in the PPP, describing the party’s relationship with Gilgit-Baltistan as one spanning three generations. He added that the party had secured a significant mandate in Diamer for the first time.
He further said the electorate had backed the PPP despite the party not being in power at the federal level. He thanked the party’s leadership for its continued support and also acknowledged the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for facilitating the formation of the provincial government.
