Karachi mayor orders blacklisting non-performing contractors, firms

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab today directed the Engineering Department to issue a ten-day notice to contractors who are not performing and blacklist them and their firms.

According to a statement issued by KMC today, the contractors who did not deliver quality work would not be paid while the payment to the contractor of the G Alana Road project had been withheld, the mayor said while presiding over a meeting of Engineering Department officers and engineers at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation head office.

He said: “Funds are available for all development schemes, and the Engineering Department must expedite the work. Delays and slow progress in development projects will not be tolerated.”

Wahab, reprimanded the relevant engineers for the slow pace of development work and failure to complete projects on time in different districts of the city. He instructed them to speed up the ongoing development schemes and ensure their timely completion to provide facilities to the citizens.

The mayor further stated that during this financial year, 330 development schemes of the District ADP would be completed, while out of 125 schemes under the Provincial ADP, 76 schemes would be completed. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has received Rs2,488 million for 482 District ADP schemes and Rs4,250 million for 125 Provincial ADP schemes. So far, Rs700 million had been spent on District ADP schemes, and Rs2,296 million on Provincial ADP schemes, the mayor said .

Wahab directed that quality work should be a condition for roads and other construction projects, and there should be no room for substandard work. “Strict monitoring has been initiated to ensure the proper and transparent use of funds allocated for development works, and a comprehensive strategy is being followed for the development projects. Therefore, the work at every stage must be of the highest standard.”

He emphasized that the newly designed poles for streetlights should be installed to enhance the city’s beauty. Efforts should also be made to ensure that roads, footpaths, and other public welfare works are of high quality and aesthetically pleasing, contributing to the overall beautification of the city, the mayor said.

Wahab further said that the goal of developing basic infrastructure in Karachi was to provide facilities to citizens and resolve their issues, so officers and engineers should keep this objective in mind and ensure immediate and prompt implementation of the instructions given. Extensive development work would be carried out across all districts of Karachi during this financial year, Wahab concluded.
