Karachi police mull over video conferencing system in court matters

Karachi:On the directive of Additional IG Karachi, DIG Police Security and Emergency Service Division Maqsood Ahmed chaired a video link meeting regarding establishment of video conference system for witness protection and under trial prisoner production in Karachi.

Commandant SSU Ghulam Murtaza Tabassam, SSP Court Police Capt. (r)? Muhammad Asad Ali Ch., SP Madadgar-15 Abdullah Memon, SP Jamshed Quarters Zubair Nazeer, SP Kemari Sumair Noor Channa, Director I.T CPO Ms. Tabasum Abbasi and other senior officials attended the meeting which was held via video link by observing the government’s instructions regarding social distancing.

It was decided during the meeting that initially five (05) video conference centres will be established in the city which will extend later-on to ensure witness protection during court proceedings. They will be linked with trial courts and prisons. Each model court and prison will have model conference room for recording of witness and production of under trial prisoner via video conferencing on approved protocols of honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The software and hardware standards to be used in these centres will comply with honorable Supreme Court’s SOPs of video conferencing already in place for digital submissions of evidence and video conferencing. Secondly, the safety and security of the data/storage will also be ensured. The software for video conferencing will be acquired from globally renowned I.T firm ‘lifesize’.

Moreover, meeting with all stake holders i.e. District and Session Judges South, District and Session Judges Malir, Superintendents of Central and Malir Jails will be convened to take them on-board for this project.
