Mian Zahid Hussain Praises Diplomatic Progress in Islamabad Peace Talks; Urges Stability in Global Markets

Karachi: Mian Zahid Hussain, a prominent business leader and former Provincial Minister of Information Technology, has expressed cautious optimism about the ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the US-Israel-Iran conflict. He emphasized that the economic survival of the region hinges on the success of the Islamabad negotiations, noting the importance of the conditional two-week ceasefire that began on April 8, 2026. This ceasefire has offered critical respite for a global economy affected by volatile energy prices. During the conflict's peak, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for the world's petroleum, resulted in record-high global oil prices, severely impacting Pakistan's industrial sector.

According to Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum, Mian Zahid Hussain commended Pakistan's civil and military leadership for facilitating the ceasefire and initiating high-level dialogue. The "Islamabad Talks" on April 11-12 at the Serena Hotel marked a significant engagement between the United States and Iran, being the first of its kind since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. While no final agreement was reached during the initial session, the continuation of talks under Pakistani mediation is seen as a diplomatic success. Hussain highlighted Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir's visit to Tehran as pivotal in addressing security concerns and building trust in the peace process.

The veteran business leader also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's diplomatic efforts in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye, which have helped consolidate regional consensus on de-escalation. Hussain noted that the international community, including leaders from Italy, Canada, and Austria, has recognized Pakistan's key role as a mediator. Looking ahead, he expressed hope for the upcoming talks in Islamabad scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, stressing the urgency of the situation as the ceasefire window closes. He urged both parties to prioritize reopening the Strait of Hormuz and achieving a permanent cessation of hostilities to avert a regional crisis. Hussain concluded by highlighting the opportunity for Pakistan to secure long-term economic stability and enhance its global standing.
