MNAs and Ms Zala Qaiser’s surprise visit of National Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine

Islamabad, August 26, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Hon. Members of the National Assembly of Pakistan paid a surprise visit to National Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (NIRM), Islamabad alongside Ms. Zala Qaiser, the daughter of the Hon. Speaker National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on Thursday the 26th August, 2021.

NIRM was established in 1987/88 under a presidential order to provide state of the art health care facilities for all types of disabilities. All services that the hospital provides were thoroughly inspected by the august forum. The faculty members were inquired about their requirements besides taking direct input from the patients about the standard of services provided therein.

The Hon. Members assured that the shortcomings as informed and founded during the inspection would be met on war footings through the Special Committee on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) working under the chairmanship of the Hon. Speaker National Assembly. The hospital administration informed about the shortage of human resource and medical equipment being the prime reason for the patient’s long waiting list besides the pandemic Covid-19.

It is pertinent to apprise about the unparalleled progress that the Special Committee on (PWDs) under the Speaker National Assembly has made for the inclusion, uplift and mainstreaming of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as committed/announced during the historic commemoration of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in 2019 at the Parliament House.

It has successfully translated the constitution of Pakistan into braille, conducted accessibility audit and upgraded the Parliament House building accordingly and is on its way to launch the National Assembly official website accessible to PWDs, making it one of the few Parliaments in the world.

The Special Committee in-addition to the aforementioned steps has developed a comprehensive roadmap to capitalize on the potential of differently abled persons as productive citizens of the state. It has made significant progress in making health, education and employment to be available for this important segment of our society. The Issues related to PWDs have been taken up with the CDA, NADRA, POLICE, EHSAAS PROGRAM, HEALTH, COMMERCE and EDUCATION MINISTRY to name the few.
