Nine Lawmakers Remain Suspended by Election Commission Over Asset Non-Disclosure

Nine national and provincial lawmakers continue to face suspension from their respective legislative bodies for failing to submit mandatory annual asset declarations to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the 2024-2025 financial year.

According to a report by Free and Fair Election Network on Tuesday, the memberships of the legislators have been withheld since January 16, 2026, in accordance with Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017.

Initially, the ECP suspended a total of 159 members of Parliament and Provincial Assemblies on January 16 after they missed the December 1st legal deadline for filing their statements of assets and liabilities. Over the subsequent 26 days, the memberships of 150 of these legislators were restored following their compliance.

The nine members whose suspensions are still in effect represent a broad political spectrum. They include two from the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) and one each from the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam Pakistan (JUI-P), Balochistan National Party (BNP), Jamat-e-Islami (JI), and the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), alongside one independent member.

These suspended lawmakers belong to various assemblies: four are from the Sindh Assembly, two from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and one each from the National Assembly, the Balochistan Assembly, and the Senate of Pakistan.

Among the 150 reinstated members, the PML-N saw the highest number of restorations with 54 legislators, followed by the PPPP with 40, and 39 independents. Other parties whose members had their credentials restored include Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) with seven, JUI-P with three, Awami National Party (ANP) with two, Pakistan Muslim League (PML) with two, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTIP) with two, and PTI with one.

A breakdown by legislative body shows the Punjab Assembly had the most restorations with 50 members reinstated. This was followed by the National Assembly with 31, the Sindh Assembly with 29, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly with 26. The ECP also reinstated the memberships of eight Senators and six members of the Balochistan Assembly, as reported by the Free and Fair Election Network.
