Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar today launched Pakistan”s first-ever Google Chromebook assembly line on Tuesday, an initiative the government highlights as a significant industrial milestone aimed at creating jobs, developing local supply chains, and paving the way for future technology exports.
Addressing the launch ceremony, the Deputy Prime Minister described the event as a momentous occasion in the nation”s digital progression. He stated that localizing the assembly of Chromebooks is expected to make digital tools more affordable and inclusive, with a particular focus on the education sector.
Dar emphasized that beyond its educational benefits, the initiative carries substantial economic importance. He noted that Google”s recent decision to open a local office in Pakistan is a strategic milestone, representing a powerful endorsement of the country”s digital potential and positively impacting the digital economy, innovation ecosystem, and global investor confidence.
The Deputy Prime Minister detailed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Pakistan and Google, under which the two will collaborate to provide skills training for one hundred thousand developers across the country. He also mentioned joint efforts to advance localized AI-powered solutions, such as developing Android services for public safety.
He affirmed the government”s commitment to fostering an environment where global technology leaders can invest and establish a sustainable local presence. He outlined a policy vision to transform Pakistan into a regional hub for technology development, supported by a regulatory framework that encourages innovation and investment. Rationalizing the tax structure to a more reasonable level is also part of the government”s agenda, Dar added.
In her remarks, Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima termed the launch a “transformative step,” noting that it integrates the technology, manufacturing, and education sectors. She expressed a firm commitment to continuing the nation”s digital journey at an accelerated pace.
