Pakistan Seeks UNESCO Backing for “Education Emergency” and New Heritage Sites

Islamabad, 2-Feb-2026 (PPI): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the government’s "Education Emergency" initiative, a major drive to maximise the enrolment of out-of-school children, during a meeting with the Director General of UNESCO, H.E. Dr. Khaled El-Enany, on Monday.

The discussion also covered a proposal for a new partnership to enlist additional cultural locations, such as the Khewra Salt Mines, as World Heritage Sites, building on the existing collaboration that supports six protected sites in Pakistan.

He shared insights from his previous tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, referencing his successful track record in the education sector.

The premier, who congratulated Dr. El-Enany on his recent election as Director General, was assisted by Federal Minister for Education & Professional Training Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi, and Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khichi.

Director General UNESCO thanked the Prime Minister for the warm welcome and noted that he had travelled to various schools and cultural sites during his short visit.
