At the United Nations, Pakistan today reiterated its steadfast support for peace, stability, and sustainable development in the West Africa and Sahel region, emphasizing the importance of national ownership and regional cooperation in addressing the complex challenges facing the area.
During a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, which focused on the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Aamir Khan, commended UNOWAS’s comprehensive efforts in promoting preventive diplomacy and inclusive political dialogue. He appreciated the organization’s role in fostering regional cooperation and welcomed the upcoming independent strategic review.
Ambassador Khan reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries in the region and adhered to the principle of non-interference in internal state affairs. He highlighted Pakistan’s enduring and diverse partnership with Africa and acknowledged the significant services of Pakistani peacekeepers in United Nations peace missions across the continent.
Expressing deep concern over the persistent threat of terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel, Ambassador Khan called for enhanced regional and international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. He advocated for a comprehensive strategy that addresses the root causes of terrorism alongside security measures.
While promoting regional cooperation, he welcomed the ongoing dialogues between ECOWAS and the Confederation of Sahel States and encouraged continued engagement to address shared challenges and rebuild trust.
Highlighting the link between peace, security, and development, Ambassador Khan urged the international community to continue its support in addressing the region’s humanitarian and socio-economic challenges, particularly pointing out the lack of financial resources for humanitarian activities.
